Perdomo Habano Maduro

After a long week of teaching guitar I decided to come home, relax, and review a cigar. This particular stick came to live in my humidor courtesy of my buddy Jerry Cruz from the Stogie Review. Anyway, this cigar looked amazing just resting in the bottom drawer of my humi, so I decided it was time to send this one to Cigar Heaven.

I had smoked another one of these about a month ago and had a very good experience, all the while hoping it would repeat itself.

This Perdomo has an incredibly attractive Nicaraguan wrapper, Nic binder, and Nic fillers. I really enjoy cigars with Nicaraguan components, so this should be good. This cigar has a very strong “barn” smell prior to lighting it, actually, it’s the strongest scent like this I’ve ever smelled on a cigar. It’s firm and the construction is spot on. I noticed a small “notch” on the wrapper leaf… never really seen this before.

Okay, so I’ve cut and lit this cigar, and so far so good. The draw is perfect, the flavors are awesome, and the volume of smoke is keeping me entertained. It’s about 75 degrees out here, and humidity is high tonight so I’ll have to keep an eye on the burn line.

Alright, I’m well into the first third now, and wow… This sucker tastes better than the first one did. You get that nice maduro flavor, but with a cocoa/coffee hint on the draw. It’s smooth to smoke, and isn’t strong at all. Sometimes Nicaraguan components give a spicy medley to enjoy, but this one is as smooth and calm as can be. This burn line is a little bit funky now. I’ve already had to correct a few times and I’m not even 20 minutes into my smoking ritual.

Okay, I’m about half-way through this Perdomo Habano Maduro now. This cigar is fantastic! I’m really glad Jerry sent two of these, seeing as how this one is so much better than the first I smoked a while back. I typically don’t buy Perdomo cigars. Not because I don’t like them or anything, but usually I forget about the brand for some reason. Come to think of it, I actually have enjoyed pretty much any Perdomo I’ve tried up ’til this point (Reserve Champagne, Lot 23, etc.). The burn line is completely jacked up. I’m not sure if that’s my fault or just that I’m dealing with a stiff breeze and high humidity. Insert grumbling here.

The final third is really blasting my tongue with some awesome maduro flavors now. I don’t even know how to describe it other than to say that it’s maybe like chewing on the wrapper itself. That sounds gross. It’s just a huge amount of thick, creamy flavors. There, that’s better LOL.

I would strongly recommend trying this cigar to anyone who enjoys maduro wrappers. It’s flavorful, burns pretty well, and isn’t as powerful as it may appear.

Highlights

  • Incredible amounts of flavor throughout
  • Good construction minus the weird wrapper “notch”
  • Plenty of smoke

Have a great weekend!

Nice review Mike! The Maduro was a bit too much for me (which is why I sent it your way) and I’m glad you enjoyed it. Like most cigars, I tend to go to the Connecticut wrappers so the Perdomo Habano Connecticut is more along my tastes.

I think the burn thing is a Perdomo thing. I find myself having to babysit them no matter what line of Perdomo and I smoke inside (I know, you’re jealous).

    Hi Mike,
This was the first Perdomo I ever had and I absolutely love it! Rich, mouth filling, full flavored and bodied…perfect.
I’m thinking about the Lot 23 next. You didn’t list it as a ‘have tried’, so I wonder if you have?

    Doc,

Yes, I’ve had the Lot 23 before. I don’t remember much about it now, but I believe I really liked it!

Mike, great review bro! Of all the Perdomo cigars, this cigar is the one that consistently holds my attention. The burn can sometimes be a little off, but I expect that with any broadleaf maduro or similar leaf. I really enjoy the flavor and for the price, it is right where I want it to be. I think you nailed it! – CD

hey mike. the notch in the wrapper comes from when they cut the wrapper on a wooden block they have to make multiple cuts vs. one single cut like on a stainless steel block. they pull the scrap away and if the cuts dont exactly match up, you have a little hanger and it might tear a little, like what happened in the case of this stick. this is a great smoke! i have a couple getting some age on them right now. i cant wait to fire one up again!
