Obscura

I have to first say thanks to my buddy Metal Matt who keeps me in the “Obscure” loop of all things metal (pun intended). Matt, I’m calling you out right here. I speak for all fans of metal everywhere when I ask you to start writing reviews on this site! Damnit.

Name: Obscura

Album: Cosmogenesis

Year: 2009

Label:Relapse Records

Genre: Progressive/Death Metal

So sometimes an album comes along where all the pieces come together. Holy balls, this is one of those times. I’m about to get all funky up in your eyeball holes with this one.

This album is a lot like cooking. Not where you burn the shit and give it to the dog. The other kind. The kind where you toss random things in a pan in a fit of panic when relatives come over and want you to cook. Unknown, unsure, obscure… But it comes out so delicious that you have people asking for the recipe. Yeah. Put your music pants on and listen up, folks.

Recording

Album sounds crisp and clear. Mix is balanced. Well done.

Musicianship

Let me pick my jaw up off the ground, hold on. Okay. HOLY SHIT. It’s been a while since I’ve grinned like an idiot while listening to an album. Unless it was a Weird Al polka. But seriously, this album will bend your ear over a table, give it the business, but still cuddle afterwards. This will challenge even the seasoned listener. The level of variety and ability abounds here. Blast beats + epic guitar solos + fist pumping grooves + ambient melodies + strategic catchy songwriting + sonic chaos=Amazing!

Vocals: Throaty. Growly. Clear. Melodic. Electronic. WOW.

Guitars: Able. Knowledgeable. Fearless. WOW.

Bass: Can anyone say 6-string fretless? WOW.

Drums: Holds this ship together. WOW.

Feel

I think I experienced every emotion known to man during this album. Except I didn’t cry any. If I did I wouldn’t tell you anyway. Stop looking at me. There is just something in my eye.

Overall

I’m not going to sit here and poo-poo this review with stupid little subjective opinions. GO BUY THIS FUCKER! It’s so worth it, especially if you’re a musician. If you’re not, that’s okay too. Just don’t email me asking what an arpeggio is. I charge by the half hour.

REPORT CARD: A+

  1. Dude, that is one serious review, from an equally serious metalhead. I’m ready to go pick it up, sight unseen. I’m sure I won’t be disappointed.

Of course if I am, you know my opinion of you is going to suffer. Not that you care :-P

Thanks for the call out!! I still can not stop listening to this album! This is the perfect tech death metal album! If you have read this review and enjoyed this band then check out the new album by the band Pestilence- Resurrection Macabre! The first album released in over 15 years from one of Tech Death Metal’s Originators! This band also features Tony Choy on bass guitar from the band Cynic!
