DUBYAH’S Top Ten Horror Films of 2011
Overall, I think that 2011 was a good year for horror. It definitely could have been better, but I am not the least bit disappointed. These are my favorite horror films of the year! You should absolutely watch them all!
10. Drive Angry
Drive Angry is one fun as hell throwback, grindhouse film. Nic Cage is a terrible actor and it fits perfectly in this! Plus, Tom Atkins and Amber Heard! Oh man, I love them both! I know a lot of people that passed on this, huge mistake. Awesome kills, a good bit of action and Cage drinking beer out of a human skull! What more could you want from a movie?
09. Insidious
What can I say about Insidious that hasn’t already been said? I for one was tired of PG13 horror, but damn was this one scary as hell! It has some what restored my faith in studio films! I felt like a kid watching The Exorcist all over again. It was a fantastic, original, funny and scary film. Every one really needs to see it.
08. Wake Wood
Thank God that Hammer Horror is back! After Let Me In and now Wake Wood, I have full trust in this company once more. Wake Wood, you could say is the British version of Pet Cemetery. It’s a very emotional and thrilling movie with some good kills and one creepy ass kid.
07. Amer
This French gem may have been made in 2009 and played a festival or two in 2010, but it didn’t hit DVD in the states until 2011 so to me it still counts. Amer centers on three stages of Ana’s life; childhood, teenage and adulthood. All three stages are very sensual and the ending comes together like a giallo. Honestly, the third act is something that Argento and Fulci could have collaborated on. The film has very little dialogue and really focuses on sound and imagery. Yes, it is a very artistic film, but don’t let that turn you off to it. It left me guessing and I still have discussions with friend’s months after we have already seen it. The ending will leave you guessing.
06. Dream Home
This is one outrageous, over the top; gore filled slasher from Hong Kong! I knew it was going to be good, but this one blew me away! Very innovative kills; using zip-ties and vacuum seal bags! Seriously, one of the best slasher films I have seen in years! It’s on Netflix so you can watch it for free. What are you waiting for?
05. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
Now this is one horror film that everyone from West Virginia can get behind! It doesn’t portray anyone from West Virginia as dumb…I mean it doesn’t make us all out to be rednecks…hmm okay, lets just say you will love it! This horror comedy focuses on Tucker and dale, two West Virginia natives who are going to work on their vacation home when they stumble upon some preppy college kids that are camping. All hell breaks loose and our hero’s have to face off against unspeakable evil.
04. I Saw The Devil
Wow! That’s all I can really say about this one! A secret agent’s pregnant fiancée is murdered and on his leave of absence he will track this serial killer down. It becomes a deranged game of cat and mouse that ends up in a blood bath or three. It is the most violent film I have seen in quite some time. There is also a crazy fight scene that takes place in a moving car! This is a must watch for any genre fan!
03. The Woman
The Woman had a lot of hype around it and I was really excited to see it. The only problem was that it only played a limited release and well; West Virginia doesn’t get limited releases. I had to import the blu-ray from Europe and man was it worth it. This is one of those films that ask the same question as Cannibal Holocaust did, “Who are the real monsters?” This is one brutal film and when Bloody Disgusting releases it later this year, I suggest you check it out.
02. Black Death
Black Death gives me chills every single time I watch it. It’s very slow moving, but damn does it pack a punch! Set in the time of the first bubonic plague outbreak in England, a group of knights are led by a young monk to a village that is unaffected by the plague. They have reason to believe that the village is housing a necromancer and that is why the villagers are unaffected. This journey is the fight of their lives and makes them question their own beliefs. Like I said before, it gives me chills. I absolutely loved it.
01. Attack The Block
Attack The Block is both brilliant and fun! When aliens invade a south London ghetto, a teenage gang will stop at nothing to protect themselves and their block. Filled with cockney accents, pop culture references and British slang that most of you wont understand. I personally think the dialogue is amazing. It’s action packed and hilarious. Hands down, it’s the best film I have seen all year long.
